Slate of Candidates

President – George W. Christiansen III
George W. Christiansen III has been nominated to fill the position of President of the Wisconsin Archeological Society to serve from January 2019 to December 2020. George is a professional archaeologist with over 30 years of experience in the pre- and post-contact archaeology of the Upper Great Lakes. He currently is a senior lecturer at University of Wisconsin – Platteville Baraboo Sauk County in the Department of Social Sciences and is also the Director of the Center for Wisconsin Archaeology. George has been a member of the Wisconsin Archeological Society for over 20 years and is near completing a two-year term as an At-Large Director on the Wisconsin Archeological Society Board of Directors. If elected, his primary goal will be to promote education of the general public about Wisconsin’s unique cultural heritage. He believes that this can only be accomplished by expansion of the WAS membership and providing the public opportunities to become involved in Wisconsin archaeology through WAS sponsored lectures, publications and hands-on experiences.

Vice-President – Rob Nurre
Rob Nurre has had a varied career working primarily in education, interpretation and preservation roles involved with both natural and cultural landscapes. Over a period of almost 20 years he was the Land Records Manager for the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands. In that role he was responsible for the working with many of the state’s original land records, particularly the field notes and plat maps of the original General Land Office Survey. These survey records were made available on-line based on his work. He also worked as a historical interpreter for the federal Bureau of Land Management during the 2003-2006 bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Rob coordinated and provided the introduction for the 2001 re-publication of The Antiquities of Wisconsin by Increase A. Lapham, and is known to occasionally appear in character as Lapham and other figures from the past.

For the past decade, Rob has been the volunteer caretaker of the Man Mound in Sauk County.

Rob has been a member of the WAS for most of the past fifteen years. For about eight years he has been the chair of the WAS’s Preservation of Sites Committee focusing its efforts the society’s Heim Mound property in Middleton. He has served on the WAS Board of Directors since October 2015 and was selected by the WAS Board to fill the vacant position of Vice president in June 2018. Rob led the effort to revise the WAS by-laws which were recently adopted.

Having been an organization for nearly 120 years, the Wisconsin Archeological Society has a deep and rich legacy of researching, documenting, educating about and caring for the archaeological resources of Wisconsin. The WAS needs to maintain its strong commitment to publishing The Wisconsin Archeologist while working to engage with a broader audience of people who have a more general interest in archaeology and the history of human interaction with Wisconsin’s landscape. We need to strengthen and reinvigorate our long standing efforts in the area of public programming through lectures, field experiences, hands-on experiences and publications for members and for the general public. We need to emphasize our cooperation with other vocational and avocational groups interested in archaeology and related fields of interest as we better define the important mission of the Wisconsin Archeological Society for the future.

At-Large Director (Two Positions)

Cynthia (Cindi) Stiles
Cynthia (Cindi) Stiles has been nominated to the position of At-Large Director on the Wisconsin Archeological Society Board of Directors for a term from January 2019 to December 2020. Cindi has been professional archaeologist for 45 years, mostly in the Upper Midwest. For the past 25 years, she has worked in Northern Wisconsin primarily with the Wisconsin tribes. Once as the WHS Regional Program archaeologist in the northern portion of the state and now through her employment with Lac du Flambeau tribe, Cindi continues to give talks on archeology and work with landowners, avocational and student archaeologists, and others interested in the profession. She is also a member of the State Burial Sites Preservation Board. This is an exciting time for the Society and she would use her experience in the north and with the tribes to contribute to the Society's activities.

Seth A. Schneider
Seth A. Schneider has been nominated to the position of At-Large Director on the Wisconsin Archeological Society Board of Directors for a term from January 2019 to December 2020. He has been working in the field of archaeology for over 20 years, and he became actively involved with the Wisconsin Archeological Society as the Program Chair in 2000. Currently, he has the pleasure of serving as the President of the Society. As president, he strove to set in motion more archeological events that the Society can provide members and public participants. Seth has been working with committees that are in the process of producing publications that provide updates on Wisconsin archaeology. As an at-large director, he plans to continue to work towards these endeavors and increasing the membership in the Society.

Spring Meeting Reminder

As a reminder, the 2018 Wisconsin Archeological Society Spring Meeting will be taking place on Saturday, April 7th at the Oshkosh Public Museum from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. If you have not marked your calendars, please do so. The meeting and events during the day are open to the public, but attendees must pay the $8 admission to get into the museum. Wisconsin Archeological Society members get in free to the museum. If you would like to become a member, please join us at: Membership Renewal.

There is a lot happening at the Spring Meeting. First, the business meeting will be taking place from 10 AM – 11 AM. The officers and committee chairs will give very short presentations on what is happening within the society. The focus of the business meeting is the vote on the revised by-laws, which were sent to you at the beginning of March and posted on the Society website for over 30 days. The Society Board hopes members will be able to attend the meeting to provide a vote on this important document. If these new laws are ratified, it will allow the board to conduct voting through electronic means (e.g., website survey polls) so all members can participate.

After the business meeting at 11 A.M. and in the afternoon at 2 P.M., Dr. Don Spohn will be happy to identify and talk about copper artifacts. Dr. Jeffery Behm will be giving a tour of the new permanent exhibit, “Peoples of the Waters.” Dr. Behm was a consultant during the planning and installation of the exhibit.

Before the main event, the Society is providing lunch for participants from 12 - 1 P.M. Subs, chips, cookies, and soda from Firehouse Subs will be offered.

The main event is a presentation by Dr. Spohn on “Prehistoric Copper Mining Tools.” For more information on the presentation, view the flyer here.

The agenda for the business meeting, events for the day, as well as directions and a Google Earth map to get to the Oshkosh Public Museum can be found here: Spring 2018 Meeting Agenda.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Burial Sites Preservation Law Update

Tomorrow is the State Senate's final session to consider the newly modified Burial Sites Preservation Law (AB 118). The Senate's calendar is posted online here: http://insession.legis.wisconsin.gov/senate

The session begins at 11:00 am. There are many bills on the calendar. I don't know when the burial bill will come up, but the calendar suggests that it is early in the list. There is no public comment opportunity tomorrow, but the "public" may watch the proceedings.

It is possible, though not likely, that a senator could attempt to modify the bill from the floor. If that happened, and a majority of the senate agreed, the bill would die. Any major change would have to go back to committee for a public hearing and committee consideration before it could brought to the legislature for a full vote; that could not be accomplished until after this legislative session had concluded (according to their calendar for this year).

We hope that tomorrow brings no changes and that the bill will pass. After the bill passes tomorrow, it must be signed by the Governor. A formal signing ceremony at some point in the near future is being discussed, but there is no plan in place that I know of.

Revised WAS By-Laws

The Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Archeological Society (Society) has drafted and approved revised by-laws. The current by-laws require any changes to the by-laws need to be posted on the Society website for 30 days for the membership to review and then voted upon by active members at a meeting. Please click here to view the revised by-laws.

The Society is holding the Spring Meeting on Saturday April 7th at the Oshkosh Public Museum, which will provide 32 days for review of the revised by-laws. I strongly encourage our members to join us in Oshkosh and cast their vote concerning the revised by-laws. Please watch for information about the events that will occur at the Spring Meeting.

Call for Submissions - Archaeology Around Wisconsin 2017

The Wisconsin Archeological Society editors are soliciting for Archaeology Around Wisconsin 2017. We have already had one submission before we even asked for them. We always have a great response, and hopefully this year will be no exception. Please submit your individual or your organization’s short articles to vtwinde-javner@uwlax.edu, with authors names and organizations names. If your submission is from independent work, just list yourself as an independent researcher. The guidelines for submission can be found on the front page of the journal in regards to formatting, including photos and tables, but are also listed below. Please make sure the figures will meet the requirements below. Although we have been able to print more color photos in the past few years, due to costs we cannot print all submitted photos in color. So please consider that when submitting your articles and photos, and how your photos will look in black and white. Although some contributors ask to have their figures in color, and we try to accommodate, we cannot always guarantee that depending how the layout of the articles go for the final print version. Also, make sure to send figure and table lists in a separate document.

Please submit your articles by Monday, March 19. Late submissions will likely be accepted if there is room in the layout.  If you have a larger size submission, that may be more appropriate for a separate submission as a stand-alone article.

Manuscript format: Manuscripts must be submitted electronically via CD or e-mail. PDF files may be submitted for initial review, but final submissions must be in a standard word-processing format (MS Word, rich text format [RTF], or WordPerfect). Manuscript style should conform to the journal style, which follows American Antiquity (Society for American Archaeology, http://www.saa.org/StyleGuideText/tabid/985/Default.aspx) and the Chicago
Manual of Style.
Figures: Submit illustrations (numbered sequentially) as individual files rather than embedding them in the manuscript, and provide a separate list of figure captions. Electronic versions in standard graphics formats (e.g., JPG for photos, TIFF for line drawings) are preferred, with at least 300 dpi resolution at the intended size. If suitable electronic versions are not available, high-quality hard copies may be accepted; please contact the editors first.
Tables: Submit tables (numbered sequentially) separately from the text, in either word-processing (MS Word, RTF, WordPerfect) or spreadsheet format (e.g., MS Excel). Please provide a list of table titles, and make sure table content is clear and concise and will fit on a standard page in finished form.
