GUIDELINES

This grant is awarded by the Wisconsin Archaeological Society in the name of Richard P. and Carol L.  Mason, in recognition of the significant contributions they made in the field of Wisconsin archaeology as  avocationals and professionals. Both Carol and Richard were long-time members of the Wisconsin  Archaeological Society and the affiliate Ritzenthaler Archaeological Society. Their sons, Alan and Brian  Mason, have generously donated funds for this grant. 
One $1000 grant will be awarded annually. The grant is to be used as tuition and/or fee assistance for any  member of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society (student or avocational) to participate in a Wisconsin  university/college field school investigating a site in Wisconsin. The grant funds can be used for  university/college credit, continuing education credit or fees associated with volunteer participation in the  field school. Participation can be in the form of surveys, and/or excavations and/or lab work. The grant  funds are reimbursable with the completion of the field school participation. 

To Apply:  
• Download the application form. Fill in all the required information. Incomplete applications will  not be considered. 
• Read the biography on Richard and Carol Mason.  
• Review the lists of articles. Pick three articles from List 1 or one article from List 2. Write a  summary of your choice(s), approximately 2-3 paragraphs and no more than 500 words. If you  choose three articles from List 1, you can include all three in one summary. In your own words,  explain why you chose the article(s) and what you learned. Be sure to attach your work to the  application. 
• Attach a copy of a document from the university/college showing that you are enrolled in the  field school. This can be in the form of an enrollment document or a letter from the professional  archaeologist leading the investigation, stating that you are enrolled.

The applicant must be a member in good standing with the Wisconsin Archaeological Society. All  membership categories are eligible. Membership information is available on the WAS website,  http://wiarcheologicalsociety.org.
Applications must be received by email at cydstil@newnorth.net no later than May 24. All applications will be reviewed by the Wisconsin Archaeological Society Awards and Grants  Committee (see attached set of criteria which will be used to evaluate applications). Applicants will be  notified by June 2 if they have been awarded a grant.  

Completion of Grant: 
• A brief report (2-3 paragraphs-no more than 200 words) describing the participant’s  accomplishments in the field school. This report may be uploaded to the Wisconsin  Archaeological Society website and Facebook page and printed in the newsletter. • A copy of the tuition receipt, marked as paid  
• A copy of the grade report.
